In the early 1990s, the number of Americans consuming vitamin D rose from around 0.7 million in 2000 to 3.6 million in 2007, according to a recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The number of people who have been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency, or vitamin D1 deficiency, has also climbed.
“We are a country that has a problem with vitamin d deficiency,” said Jennifer Tovar, director of the National Center for Vitamin D at the University of California, Davis.
“Vitamin D is a really important component in the prevention and treatment of some very serious diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The U.K.-based Vitamin D Council has launched a new website called vitamind.org that includes product reviews, nutritional information, product information, and links to more information.
“One of the key things that we see is that consumers are really becoming aware of the benefits of Vitamin D, and they are looking for other products that will do the same thing,” said Rachel Bremner, the council’s senior vice president of global marketing.
The council also has partnered with other organizations and companies to create educational materials about the benefits and risks of taking vitamin D supplements.
